Forthcoming Book on Breast Cancer in the Region
The PAHO Program on Non-Communicable Diseases is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of a book that addresses the disease throughout the region. This work, entitled Breast Cancer in Latin America and the Caribbean: Raising awareness or adopting costly programs?, is expected to act as an important tool and source of information to assist in reducing the burden of disease throughout these regions resulting from breast cancer. In view of this objective, the publication provides the following:
- a detailed description of risk factors for breast cancer;
- explanations regarding the consistency of results across different research studies;
- a discussion concerning the effectiveness of screening and treatment methods, including breast self-exam and mammography;
- an examination of the various factors affecting the establishment of sound screening programs in low-resource settings.
The book will be published in 2002. An announcement will be posted on the PAHO website when it is available, with details on how to obtain it.
