Regional Program on Healthy Eating and Active Living

Let's eat healthy and get moving America!

Goal: To improve the health of the Latin America and the Caribbean populations through the adoption of healthy dietary habits and active lifestyles.


  • Raise awareness and understanding of the importance of a healthy diet and an active lifestyles for all, with emphasis on the poor.
  • Develop and implement national plans of action, including interventions and policies that enable environmental and behavioral changes, and are sustainable over time.
  • Promote inter sectoral participation, including civil society institutions and private sector.
  • Evaluate changes produced by the regional and national plans of action, including identification of worthwhile interventions and policies and changes in population diet and physical activity levels.
  • Assure active technical support to countries’ Plans of Action from WHO, PAHO and other partners.

Guiding principles: The first four of the following guiding principles provide the criteria to identify and select actions and interventions, whereas the last two focus primarily on ways to achieve the stated objectives.

  • Results driven.
  • Broad-based partnership.
  • Public health leadership.

Regional Expected Results

  • Increased awareness and visibility of the central problems and actions promoted by the DPAS-LAC in the general public, health professional and political leaders of Latin American and Caribbean countries.
  • Strong partnership and agreement reached, at the regional level, on the DPAS-LAC implementation plan for physical activity and diet.
  • At least eight countries develop national plans and start the implementation phase.
