World No-Tobacco Day 2002 Awards: Call for nominations
"World No-Tobacco Day" 2002 (WNTD) will be held on May 31st. The theme this year is Tobacco Free Sports and the slogan is Play it Clean. The goal is to highlight the incongruity of tobacco's association with sport as well as the need to eliminate the promotion of tobacco products through tobacco sponsorship of sports figures, events, and facilities.
As in previous years, WNTD is an opportunity to recognize the efforts and achievements of individuals and institutions working to reduce tobacco use. This year we want to recognize those individuals, groups or institutions that have contributed significantly to (in order of importance):
- The reduction or elimination of promotion of tobacco through sports sponsorship,
- The reduction or elimination of promotion of tobacco through promotion of tobacco in sports facilities or during sports events,
- The creation of smoke-free sports facilities and events,
- Finally, we also want to recognize sports figures and organizations that have contributed significantly to tobacco control in general.
Four awards will be granted this year in the Region of the Americas. We urge you to send us nominations for the award before April 7th. In each nomination please provide a detailed and documented justification for the nomination, indicating which of the above four areas corresponds to the efforts of the nominee (more than one area can be identified).
