Vaccination Week in the Americas
WHAT: For the first time, the U.S. and 34 other countries are doing immunization at the same time, starting April 24. The aim is to vaccinate 40 million people. The hemispheric campaign kicks off in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Saturday, April 24 at 8:30 am, with PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses.
WHEN: The Pan American Health Organization will hold a media briefing on the vaccination plan Thursday April 22 at 9:30 am, with PAHO Director Dr. Mirta Roses and immunization experts.

WHY: All the countries in the Americas are preparing for Vaccination Week in the Americas, a hemispheric immunization effort that starts April 24 with the aim of vaccinating some 40 million persons. Vaccination Week events from April 24-30, coordinated by PAHO, will focus on the children normally left behind, those living in rural border regions, and the most vulnerable groups, including women and the elderly. The joint effort, which coincides with National Infant Immunization Week in the U.S., highlights the need for routine vaccinations and promotes access to health services. According to the CDC, 1 million U.S. children are not adequately immunized. The targets for the immunization effort in Latin America and the Caribbean include some 15 million children, 10 million adults, 10 million people over 60 years old, 1.4 million women of childbearing age, and 1.7 million people in other risk groups.
New York Briefing: There will also be a launch for the U.S. in New York City Thursday at 2 pm, with PAHO Deputy Director Dr. Joxel García and other officials. The U.S. has a variety of activities including in cities along the U.S.-Mexico border, in New York City, San Diego, and other areas including Arizona, District of Columbia, Florida, Maryland , Nebraska, Nevada, New York , North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
