(PALTEX) The Expanded Textbook & Instructional Materials Program
Since 1968, the Textbook Program (PALTEX), a joint Pogram of the Pan American Health Organization and the Pan American Health and Education Foundation(PAHEF), a US nonprofit organization that closely cooperates with PAHO in several activities, has provided nearly 6 million medical books and instruments to students and health workers at over 520 institutions in 19 Latin American and Caribbean countries, as part of the technical cooperation of PAHO to the Americas. PALTEX serves the needs not only of medical students, but also of a wide range of professional health disciplines, including nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, nutrition and environmental health. It provides not only print materials, but also basic diagnostic instruments required for hands-on student practice. In addition to textbooks for professionals, PALTEX now also publishes and distributes manuals and other materials focused on the needs of health services personnel at all levels of the health system. This document offers the following information: What is PALTEX? What type of publications does PALTEX provide? How does PALTEX select its publications/books? How does PALTEX function? How can an institution become a partner in the PALTEX system? Who can purchase PALTEX material? Link to the Spanish PALTEX Publications Catalog.(17/Jun/2009)

Therapeutic Education: Proposal for a Theoretical Model Based on the Experiences of the Cuban Diabetes Program
This book lays out the main challenges to the educational dimension of long-term follow-up and proposes a theoretical model for action. It defends the place of therapeutic education within clinical care, its challenges and contradictions to propose a practical transformation through a theoretical model centered on the person. It exemplifies the chance to put it these actions into practice from the prespective of the Cuban diabetes strategy. There is an analysis and scientific discussion concluding that education is important as as therapeutic act, with calls for a pedagogical method and special modes of communication centered on the person and on the development of her/his capacity and responsibility to take care of his/her own health. This page offers a translation of the prologue and access to the full text in Spanish.(23/Aug/2007)

Understanding and responding to HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination in the health sector
This review aims to contribute to deeper understanding of HIV/AIDS-related stigma and discrimination in the health services. It does so firstly through an analysis of the components of the phenomenon, how they relate and where gaps in knowledge exist; secondly by comparing studies of stigma and discrimination and projects designed to reduce their incidence and impact; and thirdly by outlining strategies for a comprehensive response. The perspective is global, but this publication makes extensive references to Latin America and the Caribbean.(30/Oct/2003)

(© OPS, 2003) (11/Mar/2003)

Community Involvement in Rolling Back Malaria
The RBM community movement is both an active participant in malaria programmes and a political force intended to bring pressure upon governments to ensure that the health care needs of those most at risk of malaria are met. Evidence-based actions underpin all operations. RBM has already achieved notable successes in increasing political will, including making malaria a priority on their development and health agenda. RBM aims to generate a dynamic societal movement among those at risk of malaria. Organized community action against malaria must include empowering the most affected so that they can help themselves.
