Washington, D.C. 49th Directing Council. October 1, 2009.- Important dialogue between Ministers of Health of the Americas during the celebration of the 49º.Directing council of PAHO analyzes the impact of the world economic crisis for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals, the most ambitious endeavor ever pursued against poverty, where the principles of equity, solidarity and the right to the highest attainable health are the core values of the PHC approach; while its guiding principles are the responsiveness to people's health needs, social justice, quality-oriented services, government accountability, sustainability, participation and intersectoriality.

Coming to Grips with Malaria in the New Millennium
This report presents an innovative strategic framework for relieving the burden that malaria imposes on society through the implementation of tried and tested anti-malarial interventions designed to improve health nationally and to promote economic development locally. Recommendations include early diagnosis, treatment with effective anti-malarial medicines, the use of insecticide treated nets, indoor residual spraying, managing the environment, improving housing, extending health education and improving monitoring and evaluation systems. Chagas Disease: An Impediment in Achieving the Millennium Development Goals in Latin America (Biomed Central / BMC International Health and Human Rights, Vol. 7)
This article outlines the need for multidimensional approaches that address specific geographically determined epidemiological profiles, especially for diseases of poverty that attack the most vulnerable populations. Stopping the cycle of suffering and impoverishment associated with Trypanosoma cruzi will play a role in human empowerment and development as well, which is the basic aim of the MDGs. CD47.R18: Health of the Indigenous Peoples in the Americas
Taking note of the existence of inequities in health and access to health care services that affect more than 45 million indigenous people living in the Americas; and because the United Nations Millennium Declaration cannot be reached unless the specific health needs of excluded populations, such as indigenous peoples, are addressed, this resolution of the 47th PAHO Directing Council in 2006 sets for the mandate to take a multicultural approach to include these groups and work towards greater equity and better health for all.(29/Sep/2006)
