WHO's Flu Strike Force Plans for the Worst Case
WHO's Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network (GOARN), over the next three months, plans to assemble a medical strike force that could be sent on six hours' notice to anyplace a potential pandemic emerges. No flu pandemic has ever been stopped or even controlled. GOARN's attempt would be the first, it being a "global fire brigade [whose] primary advice to countries is to prepare for this eventuality: emergence, silent or otherwise, of a pandemic virus that spreads worldwide more quickly than we have the capacity to contain, in a series of waves, with a very high attack rate on the population."
