11^th International Dengue Course (Havana, Cuba, 11-21 August 2009)
This course is dedicated to strengthening capacities in dengue control and prevention. Its objective is for participants--physicians, virologists, immunologists, sociologists, epidemiologists, entomologists, health managers, among others interested in this field, along with many professors from several prestigious international institutions--debate on the most relevant and updated aspects of this disease. Malaria Day in the Americas: 6 November 2008
The theme/slogan for this year's Malaria Day in the Americas is United Against Malaria--Overcoming the challenges of a borderless disease. The event is part of a worldwide campaign to raise awareness and funds to fight this disease. Local and national events will take place to commemorate it. Human Rights and Neglected Diseases
Neglected diseases impose a huge burden on developing countries, constituting a serious obstacle for socioeconomic development and quality of life. But the fact that they were bequeathed to our Region by the transatlantic slave trade makes their burden all the more galling: individuals, families and communities in our hemisphere are still suffering illness which originated in that abhorrent exploitation, more than 200 years after the outlawing of the British slave trade. Thus, taking decisive action to eliminate them as a public health problem in the Region, which is an achievable dream.(4/Aug/2008)

El Programa especial de investigación y capacitación en enfermedades tropicales, coordinada por la OMS, brinda pequeñas subvenciones para proyectos de investigación en enfermedades tropicales, las cuales están coordinadas por el Programa de Investigaciones en Enfermedades Transmisibles de la OPS. Priorities in Health
Two overarching themes emerge from the extensive research and analyses in this World Bank publication: (1) Current resources can yield substantial health gains if knowledge of cost-effective interventions were applied more fully. (2) Additional resources are needed in low-income countries to minimize the glaring inequities in health care. Increased resources would provide highly-effective interventions, expand research, and extend basic health coverage to more people. WHO contributed to this publication.(3/Apr/2006)

Specifications for Prepackaging Antimalarial Medicines: Report of a WHO Technical Consultation
The objectives of this meeting were to define minimum technical specifications for the blister prepackaging of antimalarial medicines; define minimum requirements for product labelling, product information inserts, and information, education and communication (IEC) materials for prepackaged antimalarial medicines; elaborate and review the regulatory requirements for registering antimalarial medicines as co-packaged and/or prepackaged products; and highlight issues related to improved access (good distribution, storage and other drug management processes) for end-users in relation to "course of treatment" packaging.(28/Dec/2005)

Community Interaction

TropIKA.net: Tropical Disease Research to foster Innovation and Knowledge Application
The UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) and the PAHO's Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information (BIREME) are jointly developing an interactive portal in the area of infectious diseases that disproportionably affect poor and marginalized populations. The initiative is called TropIKA.net--Tropical Disease Research to foster Innovation and Knowledge Application. The rationale is to address a basic imbalance where priority research needs are unequally covered by the global research agenda and several high-impact research areas are still neglected.(10/Jul/2007)
