Regional Meeting to Analyze Access to Antitubercular Treatment in Indigenous Populations (Panama City, 13–15 October 2004)
The purpose of this meeting was to analyze the status of TB in indigenous populations of the Region and to discuss alternatives to improve access to effective treatment, taking into consideration the geographical, cultural, and financial factors faced by these peoples. The objectives were to (1) get to know the specific situation of TB vulnerability found among indigenous peoples; (2) analyze the factors that can impede their access to adequate diagnosis, treatment, and adherence; (3) discuss innovative alternatives and strategies to allow health services to increase the detection of new TB cases, treatment adherence and cure rates among these populations; and (4) formulate workplans to deal with the problems identified and improve access to treatment and adherence.
